Worn pivot hardware is a safety concern because the structural integrity of the connection between the stair unit and the ceiling depends on these attachment points remaining rigid. Replacement of worn pivot hardware is within handyman scope in most cases.

Wood stair tread cracking and splitting is a visible and functional problem in Tampa Bay homes where wood-frame attic stairs were installed and never maintained. Attic Stair Lubrication and Preventive Maintenance
