What to Do When a Door Will Not Close Properly in Florida

Why Do Doors Stop Closing Properly in Florida?

If your door suddenly sticks, rubs against the frame, or refuses to latch, you are dealing with one of Florida's most common home complaints. The primary culprit is humidity — Florida's moisture-heavy air causes wood doors and frames to swell, changing the clearances that doors need to operate smoothly. But humidity is not the only cause. Settling, hinge wear, and hardware failure all contribute.

The good news is that most door problems are fixable without replacing the door. Here is how to diagnose the issue and what to do about it.

What Are the Most Common Causes?

  • Humidity swelling. Wood absorbs moisture from the air and expands. This is especially noticeable during Tampa Bay's wet summer months. Doors that close fine in winter may stick badly in July and August. The swelling is usually along the top or latch side of the door.
  • Hinge wear or loosening. Over time, screws in door hinges loosen — especially in soft pine frames. A door that sags at the bottom and rubs against the frame or floor usually has a hinge problem. Tightening screws or replacing them with longer ones often solves the issue.
  • Foundation settling. As a home settles, door frames shift out of square. This causes the door to bind against the frame unevenly. Settling is common in Florida's sandy soil, especially in the first few years after construction.
  • Strike plate misalignment. If the latch does not line up with the strike plate on the frame, the door will not latch. This often accompanies hinge loosening or frame shifting. Adjusting or moving the strike plate fixes the problem.
  • Warped door. Extreme temperature differences between the inside and outside of a door can cause warping. This is more common with thin, hollow-core exterior doors that should have been solid-core.

How Do You Fix a Door That Will Not Close?

For humidity swelling, planing or sanding the edge where the door rubs is the most common fix. A handyman can shave off just enough material to restore clearance, then seal the bare wood edge to prevent future moisture absorption. For hinge problems, replacing short screws with three-inch screws that reach into the wall studs provides a solid, lasting repair.

Strike plate adjustment is straightforward — remove the plate, chisel the mortise slightly in the needed direction, and reinstall. For warped doors, the door may need to be replaced if the warp is severe.
