## Measuring Backset Before You Buy
The single most important measurement before purchasing a smart lock (or any deadbolt) is the backset: the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the deadbolt bore hole. In Florida homes, two backset dimensions are common:
**2-3/8 inch backset**: Used on older doors and on doors with narrow stile widths. Requires a lock specifically made for this backset or an adjustable-backset lock set to 2-3/8 inches.
**2-3/4 inch backset**: The standard backset on most modern doors in Florida subdivisions and newer construction.
Measure before purchasing. Most smart locks support both backsets with an adjustable bolt mechanism, but confirm this before opening the package.
Also note the door thickness. Standard residential doors are 1-3/8 inches or 1-3/4 inches thick. Smart lock mounting plates are usually adjustable across this range, but thick doors (1-3/4 inches is common for solid core exterior doors) sometimes need extended collar pieces that come with the lock or are sold separately.
## The Bore Hole and Door Prep
Most existing doors already have a deadbolt bore -- a 2-1/8 inch circular hole in the face of the door. Smart locks fit this standard bore size. If you are adding a deadbolt where one has never been installed, you need a 2-1/8 inch door lock installation kit (a hole saw and spade bit combination available at any hardware store).
Check the condition of the existing bore hole. Doors that have had many locks installed over the years sometimes have damaged or enlarged bore holes. Minor roughness is fine. If the bore is significantly out of round or damaged, fill with wood filler, let it cure fully, and re-drill.
Also check the door edge bore -- the smaller hole drilled into the door edge for the bolt housing. This is typically 1 inch in diameter. If the existing edge bore is for an older bolt with a different diameter, you may need to enlarge it with a spade bit.
## Installing the Deadbolt Mechanism
Most smart locks come in two pieces: an exterior assembly (the keypad or touchscreen side) and an interior assembly (the thumb turn or motor housing). They connect through the door with a mounting plate and screws.
Insert the bolt assembly into the door edge bore. The bolt face plate should sit flush with the door edge. Secure it with the two screws provided. Do not overtighten -- the bolt needs to move freely.
Connect the exterior and interior assemblies through the bore hole. Most smart locks have a connector cable or a connecting rod that passes through the door. Thread it carefully -- kinking the connector cable will cause electronics failures.
Secure the mounting plate and tighten the assembly screws. Test the bolt operation before installing batteries: does it extend and retract smoothly? Does it reach full extension? If the bolt binds, check whether the bolt face plate is seated flat in its mortise on the door edge.
## Strike Plate Installation and Alignment
The strike plate is where most deadbolt problems originate. The bolt must align exactly with the strike hole to operate smoothly. Misalignment by even 1/8 inch causes the bolt to scrape, reducing battery life in a motorized lock and making manual operation stiff.
Close the door and rub the bolt tip with lipstick or chalk. Extend the bolt slowly against the door frame. The mark left on the frame shows exactly where the bolt is hitting.
If the bolt hits too high or too low on the strike plate, adjust the strike plate. This usually means chiseling the mortise (the recessed pocket for the strike plate) slightly in the direction needed. Work carefully -- remove only what is necessary.
If the bolt hits too far into the room (the bolt is not reaching the frame), the door has shifted. This is common in Florida block homes where the frame is embedded in masonry and has not moved, but a wood interior frame has. Correct by shimming behind the strike plate to bring the face plate closer to the door edge.
Use a 3-inch screw in at least one of the strike plate holes (most strike plates have two or three screw holes). Long screws reach the wall stud behind the door frame and resist kick-in dramatically better than the short screws included with most locks.
## Smart Lock App Setup and Code Programming
Once the hardware is installed and the bolt operates smoothly, program the lock before installing batteries. Most smart lock manufacturers have apps that guide setup. You will need:
- The lock model number (on a sticker inside the battery compartment)
- A Wi-Fi network with 2.4 GHz capability (most smart locks do not support 5 GHz only networks)
- A smartphone with Bluetooth for initial pairing
Create a master access code first -- this is your backup when batteries die or the app is unavailable. Use a 6 to 8-digit code. Avoid birthdays, addresses, and obvious patterns.
Set a lockout feature (automatic relocking after 30 seconds is a good default) and a low-battery alert so you are notified before the lock stops operating.
## Florida-Specific Considerations
Florida's humidity can affect electronic components in outdoor locks over time. Most modern smart locks are rated for outdoor use (IP44 or better), but direct sun on the keypad accelerates UV degradation of the plastic housing. If your front door faces west and receives full afternoon sun, consider a deadbolt with a metal keypad cover or a stainless housing rather than a plastic one.
Battery life in Florida's heat is shorter than manufacturer estimates. Most manufacturers test at 70 to 75 degrees; on a Tampa Bay front door where the lock body heats to 100 degrees in summer, expect 20 to 30 percent shorter battery intervals. Alkaline batteries work adequately; lithium batteries last significantly longer in heat.
In high-humidity periods, some keyboards accumulate condensation. This is generally not damaging in IP44-rated units, but wipe the keypad dry before entering codes if you notice moisture.
