The most common vulnerability in Tampa Bay homes is not the lock cylinder itself -- deadbolt cylinders are reasonably difficult to pick -- but rather the frame and strike plate assembly that the bolt secures into. A standard strike plate attached with 3/4-inch screws into a door stop that itself sits in the door frame will give way to a single kick in most residential entry doors. Understanding which hardware upgrades provide meaningful security improvement helps Tampa Bay homeowners prioritize what to address first.
## Strike Plate and Door Frame Reinforcement
The standard strike plate on most Tampa Bay homes is a small shallow-mortised plate with two 3/4-inch screws that engage only the door stop layer of the jamb -- not the structural framing behind it. The door stop is the thin strip of wood the door rests against when closed; it is typically 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick and attached to the jamb by finish nails, providing very little resistance to lateral force.
A security strike plate upgrade replaces the standard plate with a reinforced three to four-inch strike box that captures the deadbolt in a steel housing rather than a shallow mortise, combined with three-inch screws that penetrate through the door stop, through the jamb, and into the structural framing behind the jamb. This combination -- the reinforced strike box plus longer screws reaching the structural framing -- dramatically increases the force required to separate the door from the frame by a lateral kick.
Installation replaces the existing strike plate and screws with the reinforced plate and longer screws. The screw holes in the jamb are first drilled to the correct diameter for the longer screws, and the reinforced plate is mortised to the correct depth if the new plate is deeper than the existing mortise. The full installation for both the deadbolt strike and the knob/lever strike takes 30 to 45 minutes per door.
## Door Frame Reinforcement Kits
For doors that have experienced a previous break-in or have visible frame damage, a full door frame reinforcement kit provides continuous steel protection along the door jamb rather than just at the strike plate location. These kits use a steel channel or plate that runs the length of the door jamb and is secured with multiple long screws into the structural framing, preventing both strike plate failure and jamb splitting that can bypass the strike plate entirely.
Door frame reinforcement kits are particularly relevant on older Tampa Bay homes with wood door frames that have experienced weathering, pest damage, or repeated swelling and shrinking that has weakened the wood fibers around existing screws. A frame that looks intact from the exterior but has wood fiber compressed and weakened from age benefits significantly from continuous steel reinforcement rather than just strike plate replacement.
## Window Pin Locks and Secondary Latches
Double-hung windows -- the most common window type in Tampa Bay homes -- can be secured against forced entry or from being opened quietly by adding a pin lock through the meeting rail where the upper and lower sashes overlap. A window pin lock is a bolt that threads through a hole drilled at an angle through the inner sash into the outer sash, preventing the lower sash from being lifted. The pin is removable from inside but cannot be disengaged from outside.
Window sash locks from the factory are designed to hold the window in a closed and weathertight position, not to resist entry. The sash lock provides minimal resistance to someone who lifts the window sash while applying lateral pressure to the lock, particularly on older windows where the lock mechanism has worn loose. A window pin lock provides a second level of resistance independent of the factory sash lock.
Casement windows -- hinged windows that crank open -- are generally more secure than double-hung windows in their standard configuration because the locking mechanism engages multiple points along the sash, and the crank cannot be operated from outside. Secondary locks are less typically needed on casement windows unless the window frame has developed significant play.
## Sliding Glass Door Security
Sliding glass doors in Tampa Bay homes present a specific vulnerability: the factory door latch can often be defeated by lifting the door off the bottom track, which disengages the latch even when locked. Two independent security measures address this: a track bar (a cut-to-length piece of aluminum or steel in the bottom track that prevents the door from sliding when in place) and anti-lift devices that physically prevent the door from being lifted off the track.
A track bar -- often called a security bar or Charley bar -- can be a commercial aluminum rod or a length of 3/4-inch EMT conduit cut to fit the track. It is set in place when the door is closed and removed from the inside when the door needs to open. When sized correctly for the track, a track bar prevents the door from sliding even if the factory latch is compromised.
Anti-lift pins are bolts or screws inserted into holes drilled in the top track of the sliding door frame that limit the amount the door can be lifted. When the pin is installed, lifting the door can only move it the small distance between the pin and the door frame, which is insufficient to disengage the bottom roller from the track. Anti-lift pin installation requires drilling into the top track channel, which is aluminum in most Tampa Bay sliding door systems.
## Sliding Window Security
Horizontal sliding windows in Tampa Bay homes share the same track-and-lift vulnerability as sliding doors. The same two measures apply: a cut-to-length track bar in the bottom channel to prevent sliding, and a vent stop or pin through the top track to prevent lifting. Vent stops -- threaded bolts that insert into drilled holes in the frame channel -- allow the window to be set in a partially open ventilation position without allowing the window to be removed from the track.
## Peephole Viewer Replacement
Standard peepholes installed in Tampa Bay homes have a 180-degree or 160-degree field of view that allows visitors to see into the foyer while preventing the visitor from seeing in. Standard peepholes have a lens diameter that produces a significant distortion and a relatively small field of view. Wide-angle replacements at 200 to 210 degrees provide a wider field of view and reduce the blind spots on either side of the door.
