A hollow-core interior door in a Brandon or Riverview home spends the full wet season absorbing ambient humidity through its MDF or wood veneer face, and that absorption causes the door to expand -- most noticeably in height and at the leading edge that contacts the door stop. When the expanded door no longer fits the gap the frame was built for, it sticks.

The seasonal pattern in Tampa Bay is consistent: doors that stick in August and September often loosen up in January and February when the dry season reduces interior humidity. This self-correcting cycle is not a reason to ignore a sticking door, because the repeated expansion and contraction over years causes paint at the hinge edge and latch edge to crack, can distort hollow-core door structure over time, and is sometimes masking a hinge or frame issue that does not resolve with seasonal changes. Knowing whether the sticking is purely seasonal swelling or has a mechanical cause determines the right repair approach.

The three most common sticking locations and their causes: sticking at the top corner of the hinge side typically indicates a hinge problem -- the door has sagged because one or more hinge screws have stripped from the jamb, reducing hinge support and allowing the door to drop until the top corner contacts the head jamb. Sticking at the latch edge or top corner of the latch side is more commonly seasonal swelling -- the door has expanded and the latch-side clearance is insufficient. Sticking at the bottom of the door across the full width -- the door dragging on the floor -- indicates either the door itself has sagged (hinge cause) or the floor has risen slightly at the threshold from subfloor movement or flooring installation change.

A quick inspection of hinge screws is part of every sticking door diagnosis. Open the door to 45 degrees and apply upward pressure to the outer corner of the door with your hand. If the door lifts slightly under this pressure and returns to the original position when you release it, at least one hinge is not holding the door firmly against the jamb and the hinge is the primary cause. If the door does not move under upward pressure, the frame and hinge position are sound and the sticking is more likely swelling or a frame shift. Check each hinge by pressing on it firmly with your thumb -- a hinge whose screws are still firmly engaged does not flex; one with stripped or loose screws can be felt to move slightly in its mortise.

Hinge Adjustment as the First Repair Step

Hinge repair and adjustment resolves a significant proportion of interior door sticking problems in Tampa Bay homes without removing any material from the door itself. For a door that sticks at the top hinge-side corner because the bottom hinge has loose screws stripped in the jamb, the repair is to fill the stripped holes so the screws can re-engage with wood rather than turning freely in softened wood. The most effective field method for stripped hinge screw holes is inserting wooden toothpicks with wood glue into the stripped hole -- filling the void with solid material -- then driving the original screw back in once the glue has dried. For holes that are more extensively stripped, a 3-inch screw driven through the original hole location and into the structural framing behind the jamb provides a much stronger anchor than any fill method, and is the preferred fix for bottom hinges on heavy solid-wood doors in older Tampa Bay homes.

If the hinge screws are tight but the door still sticks at the top hinge-side corner, the hinge leaf may be sitting proud of the jamb surface because the mortise is too shallow -- this causes the door to lean toward the hinge side when closed and the top corner to contact the head jamb. The fix is to deepen the hinge mortise slightly with a chisel until the hinge leaf sits flush. Alternatively, for a door that sticks at the latch side because the latch-side gap is too tight, placing a thin cardboard shim behind the top hinge -- inserting it between the hinge leaf and the mortise -- tips the door slightly toward the latch side and opens additional clearance at the top latch corner. This technique addresses a small amount of sticking without any material removal from the door.

Strike plate adjustment is the repair for a door that swings freely but does not latch -- the latch bolt hits the strike plate face rather than entering the strike plate opening. Move the strike plate by removing its screws, chiseling the mortise to the new position, and reinstalling. If the latch is close but not quite engaging, an easier approach is to file the strike plate opening in the direction the latch needs to travel using a metal file -- enlarging the opening by one-sixteenth to one-eighth inch in the right direction often resolves the latch without any mortise work.

Removing Material from a Sticking Door: When and How

Material removal from a sticking door is the repair of last resort when hinge adjustment and strike plate work do not resolve the sticking -- not the first step. When material removal is necessary, the rule is to remove the minimum amount needed to restore function. A door that sticks from seasonal swelling needs clearance to accommodate its maximum expanded size -- which typically means removing enough material to leave a gap of one-sixteenth to one-eighth inch at the sticking location when the door is at its most expanded (late wet season). Removing more than this leaves the door noticeably gapped and drafty during the dry season.

For sticking at the latch edge or top of the door, a belt sander or hand plane removes material with control. Work in passes, checking fit after each pass, until the door moves without contact at the sticking location with the small seasonal swelling gap maintained. For sticking at the bottom -- the door dragging on the floor -- a hand plane or a circular saw with a guide rail removes material from the bottom edge. The door must be removed from its hinges for bottom-edge planing; mark the cut line carefully so only the necessary amount of material is removed. After planing, seal the exposed raw wood edge with paint or primer before reinstalling the door to slow re-absorption of moisture at the cut edge, which extends the interval before the same edge swells again.
